Dharmendra, regarded as one of the most successful actors in Indian cinema, boasts a career spanning over six decades and over 300 films. Despite his age of 88 years, the yesteryear superstar continues to grace the silver screen with extended cameos and pivotal roles, as seen in his latest appearance in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar. Now, he gears up for his next venture, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, written and directed by Amit Joshi, alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
In a recently resurfaced video, Dharmendra reminisced about his humble beginnings in the film industry, recalling his debut in the 1960 movie Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. During an episode of Dance Deewane, he recounted his first meeting with the producers, where they offered him a meagre sum of Rs 51 for his role. Despite the low pay, Dharmendra considers that amount lucky for him, given his subsequent rise to stardom.
While his initial films, including his debut, failed to make an impact at the box office, Dharmendra’s breakthrough came with Shola Aur Shabnam in 1961, directed by Ramesh Sehgal. However, it was Phool Aur Patthar in 1966 that truly established him as Bollywood’s new handsome sensation. Following this success, Dharmendra starred in numerous hit films such as Ankhen, Shikar, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Jeevan Mrityu, Tum Haseen Main Jawaan, Sharafat, Sholay and Dharam Veer, among others.
Beyond his cinematic achievements, Dharmendra’s love story with actress Hema Malini captivated headlines. Despite being married to Prakash Kaur at 19, Dharmendra fell in love with Hema while working in films. However, legal constraints prevented him from divorcing his first wife to marry Hema. In a bold move, the couple converted to Islam, with Dharmendra adopting the name Dilwar Khan, while Hema revealed her identity as Ayesha BR Chakraborty in 1979. The couple finally tied the knot in 1980, and later became parents to Esha and Ahana Deol.
Dharmendra and Hema Malini have collaborated in several blockbuster films such as Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Dream Girl and Razia Sultan, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema with their on-screen chemistry and real-life love story.
