For Trinamool Congress MPs, it is time for ‘agni pariksha’ in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Sources in TMC have told News18 that the top brass of the Mamata Banerjee-led party is set to undertake an aggressive “checking” of the contributions made by MPs as well as the feedback received from their constituencies to decide if they should be given a ticket for the mega 2024 battle.
This, essentially, eliminates the scope for complacency by any MP, including heavyweights who will have to undergo a stringent SWOT analysis.
Sources said the party has laid down certain parameters to gauge the candidates. These are:
How much time has the MP given to his area?
The time allotted by an MP for his constituency will be one of the key factors in deciding ticket distribution. Sources said given this criteria, some celebrity MPs may face the axe since their interaction with locals of their constituency is limited.
Track Record
Not only time, sources say the party will also see behaviour and track record of every MP, especially their dealing with the ‘aam aadmi’ and if they have extended any help to their constituents.
Corruption
The TMC is fighting corruption allegations with the arrest of several of its senior leaders and thus, a clean image will be a crucial factor in selecting candidates, sources said. In case an MP is found embroiled in corruption, the top brass will not give them tickets since the party is keen to put forth a graft-free image in front of voters.
Feedback from Constituency
From 2021, TMC has held several internal surveys and for the 2024 polls, it is expected to seek a neutral opinion from constituency voters.
Sources said the party had changed several candidates in 2021 polls too and would follow the principle in order to put up a tough fight against BJP and ensure that the saffron party does not repeat its 2019 performance.
