Womens panel drive against posh weddings

State Women’s Commission would submit within four months recommendations to the government for preparing a draft Bill against conduct of extravagant weddings in the state with the aim of enacting a law for the purpose in the long run.

Discussions would be conducted at the district level for this purpose. The decision was taken at a culmination of a workshop organised by the commission here on Thursday.

It was also decided to  conduct awareness campaigns in the political, religious and cultural arenas and among youth and women to highlight the issue. Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer, who inaugurated the workshop, pointed out that practice of dowry still existed despite   laws such as Dowry Prohibition Act.

“Wedding expenditure has become a big industry. Marriage celebrations are being shifted from homes to five-star hotels. Once youth organisations had a big role in avoiding marriage extravaganza, but their role has now diminished. Still, some are showing admirable behaviour by setting aside money for conducting weddings for others,’’ he said.
