New Delhi: A 22-year-old rape survivor in Delhi has committed suicide after the accused's family asked the woman to marry her alleged rapist, police said Tuesday.
Police said the woman took the extreme step out of humiliation when the family of her friend approached her parents after he andhis accomplice raped her.
"She committed suicide because the rapist's family was pressuring her to marry him. We are investigating the matter," DCP Ajit Singla said.
The woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan and an alleged suicide note was recovered.
"My parents and other family members are not responsible for my suicide. I am committing suicide because of the bad name brought to me by the two. They went to my village to ask people to settle the case and take money," the note read.
Police registered an FIR in the case and the main accused and members of his family for questioning.
According to the police, the main accused had come out on bail just a week ago for medical treatment as he is suffering from tuberculosis. The other accused is still in judicial custody.
The police said that they will send a team to girl's village in Uttar Pradesh to verify the facts and that they would proceed with the arrest only after verification.
