New Delhi: Bypass surgery is a surgical procedure performed to relieve angina and the risk of coronary heart disease. The arteries or veins from elsewhere in the body are grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass blockages.

The surgery reroutes, or bypasses, blood around clogged arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen to the heart. The surgery improves the blood supply and coronary circulation.

The arteries bringing blood to the heart muscle (coronary arteries) can become clogged by plaque (a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances). This can slow or stop blood flow through the heart's blood vessels, leading to chest pain or a heart attack. Increasing blood flow to the heart muscle can relieve chest pain and reduce the risk of heart attack.

In some cases where the number of blockages are more, a heart and lung machine is used and the heart stopped for about 30-40 minutes.

A patient may undergo one, two, three or more bypass grafts, depending on how many coronary arteries are blocked.

The recovery usually takes six to 12 weeks, but in most cases it is closer to six.
