New Delhi: Wanted tycoon Vijay Mallya’s extradition hearing will take place on Tuesday in London’s Westminster Magistrates Court where the Crown Prosecution Service will argue the case on India’s behalf.

Mallya, whose Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to a consortium of banks, had fled India last March.

The extradition hearing was originally scheduled for May 17, but was postponed to June 13.

Mallya has caused a stir in the recent days with his attendance at the matches played by India in the ICC Champions Trophy which is underway in England currently. At the last match against South Africa, the liquor baron was even booed by fans who shouted ‘chor, chor’ on seeing him.

India had given a formal extradition request for Mallya as per the Extradition Treaty between India and the UK through a note verbale on February 8. In May, a team of CBI officials had landed in London to give the British authorities documents related to the case and to expedite the process.

On May 9, the Supreme Court had declared Mallya guilty of contempt in the case filed by the consortium of 13 banks. The top court gave Mallya an opportunity to present his case on punishment on July 10.
