Uttarakhand government has asked banks to take immediate steps to improve credit-deposit ratio in hilly districts like Pauri and Chamoli of the state.
In a meeting of State Level Bankers Committee here, State Finanace Minister Indira Hridayesh drew the attention towards very low credit-deposit ratio in districts like Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Almora and Champawat and asked the panel to work out a plan to overcome the imbalance.
A low credit-deposit ratio indicates banks are not lending much against deposits mobilised. She asked the banks to sanction maximum loans to women under various welfare schemes launched by the government to empower them economically.
Entrepreneurs in remote villages should also be given all possible financial assistance for the growth of rural industries, she said. Principal Secretary (Finanace) Rakesh Sharma also advised the committee to sanction loans under Virchand Garhwali self employment scheme in the tourism sector not just for purchasing vehicles but also for construction of guest houses and resorts in the hill areas so that maximum number of lodging facilities are available for tourists.
Expressing the hope that the imbalance in credit-deposit ratio will go away gradually, RBI regional MD R L Sharma said it has risen from 53.41 per cent in 2012 to 57.78 per cent in March this year.
