New Delhi: The biggest police recruitment scam in the country is getting bigger. The latest round of suspensions in Uttar Pradesh includes more than 25 IPS officers and 100 state police officers

But who are the politicians behind the scam? An uneasy police force blames pressure from above.

“I feel very sorry for officers. They had to do it under pressure to retain their jobs. Some of them were cardholders of the parties in power and some of them were really honest officers. May be that had to do it under pressure to retain their jobs,” says former UP DGP, K L Gupta.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav government had recruited over 22,000 policemen. But a probe under ADG SK Mishra revealed that many candidates used fake mark-sheets and caste certificates to get the job.

Mishra even hinted at political involvement in the scam.

“The probe reveals that a very senior politician from UP knew all this and in fact went on the recruitment sight himself to get the list issued,” says Chairman of Inquiry Committee, S K Mishra.

The suspended IPS officers have already obtained bail from the Allahabad high court, indicating a long court battle ahead.

Their side alleges that Mishra is himself under the scanner.

“Mr Shailendra Kant Mishra and Mr Javed Akhtar the two important persons one is the chairman and the other is a member of the inquiry committee – they are under scanner and are being examined,” says Counsel of expelled police recruits, SM A Kazmi.

The court has asked the UP government to furnish all details regarding the case by October 10.
