UAE court to hear mercy plea of Indians today
Seventeen Indians were sentenced to death by a Sharia court in UAE on March this year.

New Delhi: A United Arab Emirates court will be hearing the plea for mercy of the 17 Indian nationals facing death sentence for the murder of a Pakistani national.

Seventeen Indians, aged between 18 to 30 years, were sentenced to death by a Sharia court for the murder of a Pakistani national in January last year during a brawl over illegal liquor business.

The accused were held guilty by the Sharia court in Sharjah on March 29, 2010 and subsequently sentenced to death.

Their families back home then appealed to the Indian government for intervention, following which a Sharjah-based lawyer was appointed to defend the convicts. Two days later, the lawyer filed an appeal in the Sharjah Court.

This is the first hearing in the appeal filed by the accused Indians. The Indian High Commission has provided legal assistance to all of them.
