TIRUCHY: Hundreds of people from all walks of lives paid homage to the mortal remains of eight members of the Builders Association of India who were killed in an air crash in Kathmandu on Sunday. It was an emotional farewell from relatives, friends, and people who attended the funeral on Wednesday.From the wee hours of Wednesday, public started thronging the National College Higher Secondary School Ground where the embalmed bodies of the eight victims, M.V. Maruthachalam, M Manimaran, T. Dhanasekaran, V M Kanakasabesan, A K Krishnan, Kattur Mahalingam, Meenakshisundaram and Thyagarajan, were scheduled to be brought from Chennai by road.The bodies which were expected to reach the ground by 5.30 am reached the place around 7 am and hundreds of builders, engineers, contractors, workers and representatives from allied industries, besides the public gathered at the ground to pay their last respects. They were taken out of the ambulance in coffins.A BAI team from Tiruchy, led by D P Balaji, had made the arrangement for the bodies to be kept for public homage till 9 am. After that the bodies were handed over to their relatives. Since most of the victims were residents of Thillai Nagar, residents of the area looked gloomy. The body of Meenakshi Sundaram was taken out for the last rites from his residence in 7th cross, Thillai Nagar around 9.30 am.  Subsequently, the bodies of Marudhachalam, Manimaran, Dhanasekaran, Jothi Thiyagarajan were taken on a procession for their burial by noon. Kattur Mahalingam’s body was taken to Kattur and around 12.30 pm and the last rites were performed.Kanagasabesan’s mortal remains will be kept at his house at 10th cross, Thillai Nagar till Thursday as his son is yet to arrive from the US to attend the funeral. MP P Kumar accompanied the bodies from Nepal. Minister NR Sivapathi and MLAs paid homage. Similarly, former ministers AV Velu, Ragupathi and N Selvaraj paid their last respects.  All the construction works in the city were stopped till Wednesday as a mark of respect.
