CHITTOOR: Is government serious about dealing with the problem at the hand? The answer appears to be a big ‘no’. An incident that took place in the district illustrates this amply.A couple of months ago, after the High Court issued directions for sale of liquor only at MRP, a liquor shop owner started selling liquor at MRP. He even displayed a board stating his intentions to that effect.A long queue of customers formed at the shop and by evening excise staff raided the shop succumbing to the pressures of liquor syndicates and filed a case.Excise officials made some noise following the High Court directions and counselled liquor shop owners to adhere to MRP.However, liquor shop owners made it clear that they will not sell at MRP and even stopped liquor sale for some time. After that, the officials keep quiet.
