Days after the attempted kidnap of a girl student at the University of Hyderabad, Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramakrishna Ramaswamy on Tuesday expressed concern and said they were working on improving security on the campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was out of town at the time of the incident, has taken stock of the situation upon his return Monday.

Following a meeting with students, he told City Express, “my prime concern now is security and we are working on it. We are also increasing lighting in the campus.” Asked about action being taken against one of the five culprits Chakrapani, who is an M.Tech student, he replied, “the police have apprehended all the five and they will face the full force of the law. We have a standard procedure to deal with those who violate campus rules. We have a proctorial board and it will carry out an inquiry. Any action will be taken after the probe.”

He hastened to add that exemplary action will be taken against those who violate the campus rules.

“They will surely be punished and there’s no way they can get away with it,” he said.

However, the Vice-Chancellor de f ended the security personnel manning the campus on that ill-fated night.

“When the car (of the culprits) came in, the car number was noted down and even their ID cards were checked. And the place where the incident happened, was not completely secluded. It was on a back road. The reaction time was good as students and the guards reached there on time for the rescue,” he explained.

Earlier at a meeting with students late Monday evening, he accepted all their demands for beefing up security on the campus.

Students’ Union general secretary Sampath Sambasivan said the VC sought two weeks to implement the same.

“Some of the demands are already under process like a strict security check at the gate, wherein students have to show their ID cards and outsiders should take a gate pass to gain entry into the campus. The patrolling of security vehicles has also been increased to five rounds from night to morning. And the toll free number will start working in two days,” he said.

About the lighting measures, Sampath said, “We have identified 19 poles where lighting is essential."
