Muzaffarnagar: Theatre owners in Muzaffarnagar have refused to screen the riot-themed film 'Shorgul' despite authorities assuring adequate security to them, officials said on Friday, a day after controversial BJP MLA Sangeet Som demanded a ban on it.
According to District Entertainment Officer Manoj Bajpayee, the theatre owners are not prepared to screen the controversial film 'Shorgul' due to fear of opposition to it.
The film would be released on July 1.
Meanwhile, the district administration has assured the theater owners of providing security.
"There is no ban on the film here and adequate security will be provided to the theatre owners when they screen the film," District Magistrate D K Singh said.
BJP MLA Sangeet Som, who has been under the scanner for his alleged role in the Muzaffarnagar riots, had yesterday demanded a ban on the screening of the film.
'Shorgul' has been shot in the backdrop of Muzaffarnagar communal riots in Uttar Pradesh.
The movie, featuring Jimmy Shergill and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles, is based on friendship between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl that snowballs into a political issue leading to unrest and chaos in society.
