Teacher gets waiver of interest on loan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister K M Mani’s intervention helped in providing an interest waiver to M Manoharan, a teacher who had availed of a medical advance for conducting  heart surgery.Manoharan, a teacher attached to Government Higher Secondary School, Kadankode, Kasargod, had availed of a medical advance of Rs 1,20,000 for conducting a heart surgery in 2005.  But misfortune struck him repeatedly with his mother, wife and children contracting serious ailments.  Adding to the gravity of the situation, his  wife met with a road accident. Due to these reasons, Manoharan had to postpone his surgery till June 2009. But the Finance Inspection Wing of the govt found that he had not utilised the medical advance for over four years and asked him to repay the amount with 18 percent interest immediately.   Following this, he repaid the entire amount on November 26, 2010. But the government insisted on payment of the interest also. When the teacher brought the issue to the Finance Minister’s attention, he directed to waive the interest.
