Hundreds of protesters blocked roads around Westminster, London.

London: A group of pro-LTTE Tamil demonstrators who spent the night at the top of Westminster Abbey, one of the main tourist attractions in the capital, have been arrested, police said on Tuesday.

The three men and one woman scaled the northside of the historic church on Monday afternoon before unfurling a banner. They ended their protest today and were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

It is the latest incident in a five-week campaign aimed at highlighting alleged atrocities by the Sri Lankan government against Tamils in the island country.

Protests have intensified since Monday after the UN said the area where civilian Tamils were being contained in Sri Lanka had turned into a "bloodbath".

Hundreds of demonstrators blocked roads around Westminster and 45 were arrested. About 100 protesters remained in Parliament Square on Tuesday and said they would keep up pressure on UK government to intervene in the crisis.

Business student Balamuhunthan Balamuhunthan, 21, said: "It is now or never.? We have created so much awareness people are now talking about us and we are slowly getting noticed."

Some of the MPs plan to raise the issue in the House of Commons on Thursday.
