New Delhi: Microsoft on Tuesday unveiled a larger but lighter version of its Surface Pro tablet, Surface Pro 3, as it ramps up efforts to make an impact on the mobile computing market and counter the popularity of Apple's iPad and MacBook Air laptop.
The Surface Pro 3, which has a 12-inch (2160x1440) screen, is slightly bigger than its last model. It will be offered in multiple configurations featuring 4th-generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. The new device is claimed to be "the thinnest Intel core product ever made."
Microsoft is hoping that the new Surface Pro 3, which runs the full Windows operating system, will be the device consumers and companies go to when they are replacing laptops.
It comes in three models, starting from $799, and will be available to order starting from May 21.
The Surface Pro is touted as a tablet that can replace your laptop. Microsoft's newly launched Surface Pro 3 has front-facing speakers that are said to be "40 per cent more powerful." It weighs 800g.
The new Surface Pro includes a pen. Users can instantly open MS One Note instantly with the Surface Pen on the Surface Pro 3.
The new Surface Pen with pressure sensitivity is said to enable a more natural writing experience, while a full-size USB 3.0 port, microSD card reader and Mini DisplayPort allow for file transfers and connections to a range of peripherals.
Microsoft says it has redesigned the Surface Pro 3's touch pad. The new device is slightly bigger than its last model, but is thinner and weighs less.
By the end of August, Surface Pro 3 and select new accessories will become available for purchase in 26 additional markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
