CHENNAI: A meeting of the DMK’s high level action committee and district secretaries on Thursday is likely to turn stormy if the issue of succession comes to the fore. Confidantes of Union Minister and South zone organising secretary M K Alagiri are expected to raise their voices in the meeting, scheduled a day ahead of the DMK General Council meet, in case party treasurer M K Stalin’s elevation is taken up for discussion.During his birthday celebrations in Madurai on Monday, Alagiri had in a veiled statement observed that he was not aware of any proposal that would reduce the ambit of district secretaries. He also described Stalin as yet another party man, which will make the situation more complex considering the long-standing rivalry among the sons of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi.Alagiri had in fact declared that he would contest for the party chief’s post if a contest was to be there for it. This remark is seen by political experts as nothing short of intra-party democracy.Another disturbing factor for Alagiri is the speculation of his step-sister Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, being accorded a mainstream party post. The high-level meet is likely to discuss the proposed amendments to the party’s bylaws, which, according to some senior party leaders will further divide the districts so as to better the administration of the party.
