BELGAUM: The protest against Marathi corporator Sambhaji Chavan — who opposed a resolution to congratulate Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekhar Kambar — entered its second day. Several outfits in other taluks of the district burnt effigies of Chavan demanding his dismissal from the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC). Muttappa Rai’s organisation, Jai Karnataka, described Chavan’s stand as “a punishable offence”, while warning of agitations in front of Vidhana Soudha if his membership from the council was not cancelled immediately. The organisation has also demanded that a civic reception be extended to Kambar. While the Chikkodi and Gokak units of Kannada Rakshana Vedike burnt effigies of Chavan and raised slogans against him, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) supported Chavan.Activists of Jai Karnataka staged a protest here and submitted a memorandum to Minister for Urban Development S Suresh Kumar demanding Chavan’s dismissal, and demanded that the elected body be superseded if it fails to extend a reception to Kambar, who, incidentally, hails from Belgaum. The Vishwa Nirman Sangha, too, urged the city corporation to apologise to Kambar and extend a warm reception to him. It may be recalled that Chavan had opposed a resolution to congratulate Kambar.
