New Delhi: Stalking cases across the country have increased over the last three years, government said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Answering a question about rising crime against women, Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir tabled data in the Lok Sabha which showed a consistent rise in stalking cases in past three years.
As per the data, 7132 cases of stalking were registered in 2016, 6266 cases in 2015 and 4699 cases in 2014.
While 8620 people were arrested and 481 convicted for stalking related crimes in 2016; in 2015, 6694 people were arrested while 473 convicted for the crime. The corresponding figures for 2014 were 5439 people arrested and 262 convicted.
Abduction and attempt to abduction cases have also been on the rise in the past few years. In 2014, 57,000 cases were registered while in 2015, it went up to 64,000.
Recently, there was a stalking case in Chandigarh in which the son of the BJP's Haryana unit chief Subhash Barala is an accused. Chandigarh police have been facing flak for diluting charges against accused Ashish Kumar and Vikas Barala and for stalking a woman. Attempt to abduct is a non-bailable offence and if this was applied, it would have been difficult for the accused to get bail.
