Colombo: India lost the first Test match against Sri Lanka inside four days by an innings and 239 runs.

The famed Indian batting line-up folded up for just 138 runs in only 45 overs in its second innings after being forced to follow-on.

Sri Lankan spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis ran through the Indian innings bagging six and fours wickets each to take their team to an easy win.

The hosts had declared on 600-6 in their first innings and then bowled out India for 223 runs.

Just like the second innings, Muralitharan and Mendis were the chief tormentors in the first innings, too, accounting for nine wickets between them.

Despite boasting of a batting line-up of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman; the Indians lasted for only 127.5 overs in the middle in the entire match where as Sri Lanka batted for 162 overs.

Muralitharan, Test cricket’s highest wicket taker, accounted for 11 Indian batsmen giving away 110 runs while the rising spinner, Mendis, took eight wickets for 132 runs.
