CHENNAI: Stating that a whopping 1,449 land grab complaints had been received until July 1 by the State police, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced setting up of special units in the police headquarters here and at all districts to probe such allegations.Reiterating swift action to retrieve land allegedly grabbed during the previous DMK regime, Jayalalithaa said action was not taken despite complaints during the DMK’s tenure.Pointing out that land grab complaints continue to pour in, she said it was difficult to investigate a large number of cases in the police stations.“To probe land grab complaints and take action, separate wings will be set up in the State police headquarters and at all districts. I have ordered the police to take immediate action on such complaints,” she said. The special units will take action in accordance with the Indian Penal Code, besides other statutes, she added. On the AIADMK’s poll promise to retrieve usurped land, she said: “The setting up of special wings would instill confidence in those who had lost their property that they would get it back.Land grabbers would be brought to justice and the properties would be returned to the original owners.”
