HYDERABAD: In a development that has caught Congress workers and leaders by surprise, Congress high command has sent party senior leader and Union minister Vayalar Ravi to the state to study the party’s preparedness for the election to Nellore Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly seats. Ravi arrived in Hyderabad on Monday for a three day tour of the state.Ravi, a trusted lieutenant of Sonia Gandhi, has been sent to the state at a time when chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is away at Delhi till Wednesday. His visit has raised many eyebrows as the high command chose not to send Ghulam Nabi Azad, the state incharge of party affairs.Though Ravi had been tipped off on his assignment a few days ago, he was asked to visit Hyderabad only on Monday and visit various parts of the state.According to Congress leaders, Ravi has been sent to Hyderabad because he was once the party in-charge in state and if different leaders are sent, the party would be able to get a feedback that could be closer to reality.Sources said, Ravi, after holding talks with party leaders and workers, including ministers and legislators, would prepare a report and submit it to party president Sonia Gandhi on his return to Delhi. Sources say that Sonia Gandhi is understood to be worried over the internecine quarrels within the Congress and YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy biding his time to grow at its expense. What has upset Sonia Gandhi the most, sources say, was the victory of BJP in Mahbubnagar in the recent byelection even when the Congress nominee had chances of victory.
