KOCHI: The Solidarity Youth Movement has urged the authorities to take action against the National Highway officials who concealed the toll notification and deprived the local residents even the limited allowances given to them.
The organisation alleged that the state government came to a decision on toll collection without even perusing the basic notification. The toll notification published in the India Gazette dated 31 March 2011 states that the local residents, traders as well the employers and employees of factories located within 20km radius may travel freely along the service road, Solidarity Youth Movement members said. "The system adopted by the government to determine toll fee does not adhere to any prescribed norms. The national highway authorities do not have the power to determine toll rates without any time frame. The AroorEdappally road has been built without adhering to the norms laid out in the manual of the national highway," the organisation said in a press statement.
