New Delhi: A short documentary film called Smile Pinki based on an eight-year-old from Uttar Pradesh who becomes a social outcast due to a cleft lip won the coveted Oscar. And little Pinki was present to see her story win.
"I want to thank Dr Subodh Kumar and the heroine of the film Pinki Kumari for her inspiring story," said Smile Pinki director, Megan Mylan.
"I am very happy that my daughter has won the award. This is for the benefit of the village and the community and the community will celebrate this win," said Pinki's mother Nirmala Devi.
The 39 minute film in Hindi and Bhojpuri was set in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The story is about Pinki, a six-year-old from Mirzapur who is born with cleft lips. She is socially ostracised until she meets Pankaj, a social worker who ensures that Pinki gets a free surgery and her smile back.
"Earlier she was very depressed, she wasn't like a child at all. Now she is like any other eight-year-old," said Pinki's doctor, Dr Subodh Kumar.
The Oscar nomination not only got Pinki to school, but also made her a star overnight. Pinki flew down to Los Angeles to attend the ceremony with her father and doctor.
The girl who was once a social outcast was sharing the red carpet with the who's who of Hollywood. The girl who once couldn't smile has today put a smile on a billion Indian faces.
