Colombo: Sri Lankan Air Force jets pounded suspected Tamil Tiger positions in the island's northeast on Tuesday, the military said.

Israeli-built Kfir jets hit Tamil Tiger positions at a location west of Morawewa near the Trincomalee district on Tuesday morning, a military official said.

There was no immediate confirmation of casualties.

The attack was on cadres fleeing the Vakarai area, which security forces captured from the Tigers two weeks ago.

President Mahinda Rajapakse visited Vakara on Saturday and ordered the resumption of relief work before some 30,000 civilians could return to the homes they abandoned during fighting.
