Bangalore: Unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia sprang a surprise beating top seed and defending champion Mara Santangelo of Italy in straight sets to win the $1,75,000 Tier III level Sony Ericsson Bangalore WTA tournament.
The 19-year-old Russian, who scripted a fairytale, came out with flying colours when the 36th ranked Italian's backhand crashed in to the net on the fifth match point at 5-4 in the second set after an hour and 35 minutes.
Playing in her fourth WTA tournament, Shvedova, who defeated Sania Mirza in the quarter-finals, showed determination and courage to destroy Santangelo 6-4, 6-4 to pocket the prize money of $25,840 and 140 points with her maiden singles title.
Santangelo's bank account will be credited by $13,520 in addition to 100 WTA points.
