When you watch Saif Ali Khan's latest film 'Happy Ending', you can't help but draw parallels to his roles in 'Cocktail' and 'Love Aaj Kal'. While no one expected a path-breaking role from the Nawab in the movie, but one (including Saif) had hoped that this would accelerate his dawdling career. No doubt we have loved him in his 'Salaam Namaste' and 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' avatar, but we think it is time that Saif Ali Khan steps out of his comfort zone and stop playing a man-child in every other film of his.
'Happy Ending' has surely not given anything new to Saif Ali Khan. He has just tried to be the way he is seen in most of his movies and after a point, it's a déjà vu of sorts for the viewers. Directors of 'Go Goa Gone' Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK tried to make a spoof on rom-coms in Bollywood, but it turned out to be a sheer disappointment.
Saif's role as a commitment phobic NRI has been reused and recycled to an extent that we seriously want him to take a break, ponder over his choices perhaps and shift to thought-provoking roles.
At a time when actors of Saif's stature are willing to step out of their comfort zone and experiment, maybe it is time for the actor as well to go back to some basics. It is not that he can't act. Whoever has seen him in 'Omkara' or in the underrated 'Ek Haseena Thi' can vouch for his acting skills. He has in the past experimented with different genres and all have been impressive. So what is it that makes the actor hesitant now and stick to formula films?
Interestingly, in 'Happy Ending' Govinda steals the limelight with his limited screen time. But in a story which centers around a commitment phobic Saif Ali Khan, Govinda's charming performance does little to the film.
