THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A fire which broke out at a commercial building at Thycaud here on Sunday afternoon created panic. The shop, Nisha Catering, Decoration and Hire Services near Sastha temple, was the one that caught fire. According to sources, the fire broke out at around 4.30 p.m. Large number of plastic furniture and other articles used for marriage ceremonies were reduced to ashes. The roof of the shop was also damaged in the fire. Three fire fighting units from Chengalchoola Fire Station rushed to the spot and fought the fire under the leadership of Station Officer S S Prins. It took about 30 minutes for the fire fighters to put out the massive fire. Their timely action also prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. The Fire and Rescue Service authorities suspect that the flames might have spread from a nearby pile of garbage which was set afire by someone. The shop was run by one Rasheed and the building belonged to one Meera Bai. The shop authorities claimed that they had suffered a loss of about `1.20 lakh.
