Sena's demand for Belgaum gains momentum
Shiv Sena has asked the Maharashtra Governor to intervene hoping he can put forward the case to the State Government.

Maharashtra: The demand for Belgaum in the Maharashtra-Karnataka border crisis has gained further momentum.

The Shiv Sena has asked the Maharashtra Governor, S M Krishna, to intervene and a Sena MLA delegation led by executive President, Uddhav Thackeray, are hoping Krishna can act as a mediator and put forward the case to the State Government.

The Sainiks have stated that they will persist in their endeavour to merge Belgaum with Maharashtra even threatening drastic measures if the issue isn't resolved.

The trouble began last week when the Belgaum City Corporation was dissolved following its decision to merge the Marathi speaking areas of the district with Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Ekikarana Samithi (MES) had taken offence and raked up the issue of merging Belgaum with Karnataka.

"If the issue goes out of hand then we have been told to take action. The matter is in the court and the people of Karnataka can express their opinions there. There was no need to attack," said Uddhav Thackerey.

The Shiv Sena on Wednesday staged a walk out in the Lok Sabha over the law and order situation in Belgaum.

In the 60s, the Centre had appointed the Mahajan Commission to sort out the issue. The commission proposed that Marathi-speaking areas like Sholapur be merged with Maharashtra while Belgaum would stay with Karnataka. But, there's never been accord on that.

Karnataka Shiv Sena president resigns

Meanwhile, the Karnataka president of the Shiv Sena, Pramod Mutalik, has resigned from the party because of the Belgaum issue.

Mutalik strongly condemned Sena supremo Bal Thackerey's stand on Belgaum saying that the Mahajan Commission report was the final on the border issue between the two states.

"The Shiv Sena in Karnataka was committed to protect the interests of the Kannada people. The members of the MES are raking up the border issue unnecessarily for political gain," he said.

Former BJP leader, Govindcharya and Tamil Nadu leaders are going to speak to Mutalik on Wednesday to urge him to reconsider his resignation. Mutalik will head to Mumbai on Thursday to meet Bal Thackeray to discuss the issue.
