Mumbai: After his tweets supporting 1993 Mumbai blasts death row convict Yakub Memon triggered a storm on the social media and political circle, Bollywood actor Salman Khan on Sunday evening retracted his comments. He also apologised for any misunderstanding his tweets might have created.
"My dad called and said I should retract my tweets as they have the potential to create misunderstanding. I here by retract them," Khan tweeted.
"I would like to unconditionally apologise for any misunderstanding I may have created unintentionally. I also strongly condemn those who are claiming my tweets are anti-religious. I have always said I respect all faiths and I always will," he added.
Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan and Salman's father had slammed him over his tweets. "Whatever Salman has written is ridiculous and meaningless. Salman is ignorant of the issue and people should not take him seriously," he had said.
Security was also beefed up outside Salman's residence after Shiv Sena threatened to protest.
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who fought the 26/11 case, has also urged Salman to withdraw his tweets, "In 1993 when celebrities were arrested, Bollywood came out and supported them saying "you're innocent". I warned them back then saying not to interfere with judicial process. I hope that Salman does not do the same. He should understand the agony of people."
The Supreme Court had dismissed Yakub's curative petition against death sentence and he will now be hanged on July 30. The curative petition was the last legal recourse available for Memon.
