A runaway couple allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at a hotel in Haridwar as their family members were opposed to their relationship, police said on Wednesday in Dehradun.
The couple had fled their homes at Deoband in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district as their families did not approve of the relationship, police sources said. The matter came to light on Tuesday when Suraj (17) and his partner Uzma (15), who belonged to a different community, were found vomiting inside the hotel room, they said.
Suspecting something wrong, hotel authorities reported the matter to the police and the young couple was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared them dead, they said.
A search of the hotel room led to the recovery of an empty bottle of pesticide and a photograph of the duo. At the back of the photograph they have written a suicide note seeking forgiveness from their parents for taking the extreme step as they could not live apart from each other. Police said the couple arrived at the hotel on a motorcycle on December 15 and was staying at the hotel for the past two days.
The bodies have been handed over to their kin after a postmortem, they said.
