Moscow: A Russian rocket carrying 18 satellites crashed shortly after takeoff early on Thursday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, reported Russian media.
The first stage of the Dnepr rocket failed to separate and crashed in an uninhabited area 25 km from the launch pad, said Russia's space agency.
The satellites belonged to Russia, Belarus and Italy.
Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko was at Baikonur to witness the launch of his country's first satellite.
