CHENNAI: After announcing the Chennai Collectorate was a corruption-free zone, volunteers of India Against Corruption (IAC) approached the Inspector General of Registration’s office here in Santhome on Thursday in a bid to seek a pledge against corruption from all the staff.According to Ramaswamy, a volunteer of IAC, the Registrar’s office was notorious for corruption, although many officials in the department are clean.A group of 20 volunteers met the IG Registrar, Dharmendra Prathap Yadav, and offered a declaration prepared by IAC members, which he declined to sign. A brief conversation was held on the flaws in the system. The officer even cited a declaration he signed while entering public service to justify his decision not to append his signature to the IAC declaration. After some brainstorming with the volunteers, he recalled the first bribe he payed to an office clerk in Allahabad University to submit his application, for which he still regretted. He said that there were warning boards announcing the fee amount in every sub-registrar’s office across the State.Later, as a goodwill gesture, Yadav issued an official declaration assuring to run a corruption-free office duly signed by him. Members of IAC were pleased by the IG’s act and plan to approach every sub-registrar office in the State along with a copy of his declaration to create awareness among the staff and people alike.
