BANGALORE: Newborns with birth defects ranging from mild to life threatening are easily treatable with excellent results. The three leading categories of birth defects are structural/metabolic, congenital, and infections. Progress has been made in the detection and treatment of newborn birth defects, but immediate intervention in some cases can improve the outcomes. Common birth defects are often the result of genetic, environmental factors and maternal illness. In an attempt to create awareness and educate parents about such problems among children Columbia Asia Hospital, Yeswanthpur is organising a paediatric surgery camp. The camp will commence from September 6 and will continue till September 10, between 10 am and 2 pm at the hospital. The camp offers consultation with Dr Sai Prasad, neonatal and paediatric surgeon on various problems faced by children including neonatal anomalies, children with defects caused by trauma, and other complex birth defects such as conjoint twins. In addition, advice will be given on dealing with common conditions such as inguinal hernia, absent testis, appendicitis, cardiac disease, urological anomalies, orthopaedic anomalies, growth problems, endocrinopathies and ambiguous genitalia amenable to surgery, benign and malignant disease, soft tissue, cervical, truncal and limb tumours, neurological anomalies and other acquired diseases.“Some children may not be as easy to treat as they may not co-operate and some children may not communicate about their discomfort very well with their parents or physicians. In such cases parents most of the time are extremely alarmed and nervous. Camps such as this help parents to manage such situations better and also deal with any complexities that might arise,” explained Dr Sai Prasad, neonatal and paediatric surgeon.Doctors will also address and advice parents of the patients on issues that are related to management of such problems, post-operative complications and care.Call and register at 080 3989 8969.
