New Delhi: In the State Of The Nation survey on safety of women as part of CNN-IBN's Agenda for Change, the majority says that a woman who is raped is not only ruined for life but also that women should abide by a certain dress code in public. More than 70 per cent men as well as women think that their relatives will react in a supporting manner if he/she faces and reports any type of sexual abuse. But surprisingly, both men (67 per cent) and women (59 per cent) believe that a woman, who has been raped, is tainted and ruined for life.
In a shocking revelation, almost 80 per cent men and 59 per cent women think that women should abide by a certain dress code in public places. While 53 per cent men think that a man rapes a woman because of the way she dresses, 34 per cent women too said yes to that belief. Most men and women agree that women should be careful about the way they dress so that they don't provoke men and 86 per cent men think that women nowadays are dressing too boldly. Supporting this are 78 per cent women. More than 80 per cent men and almost 70 per cent women also believe that this bold dressing leads to more instances of sexual harassment or rape cases.
In a far cry from the modern way of thinking, 44 per cent men agree that women, who get raped or molested, invite this upon themselves. Meanwhile, both men and women mostly believe co-education schools are better than only boys'/girls' school. Painting a surprising picture, 33 per cent men and 37 per cent women think it is unacceptable to them if a woman drinks and smokes. More than 60 per cent men believe that if a woman smokes and drinks, she is of loose moral. Surprisingly, 54 per cent women also back that thought.
Most respondents also said they disapproved of those women, who display affection with men in public places and vice versa. More than 70 per cent male respondents agreed that a woman, who has pre-marital sex, is of loose moral and 64 per cent women also agreed to it. Talking of the impact of media, 74 per cent respondents (both men and women) think that films and entertainment media influences people's opinion and approach towards how they should treat women. While 38 per cent said there are always good and bad examples in films, 28 per cent said women are mostly shown as a commodity.
Item numbers in movies degrade women was backed by 70 per cent respondents and 45 per cent said Hollywood Movies are responsible For degrading women. More than 70 per cent people also think that not just films but advertisements also show women as a commodity.
