Rains paralyse Chennai again
The active northeast monsoon has caused another bout of relentless rains in Chennai bringing back memories of the October floods.

Chennai:Chennai was hit by another bout of relentless rains in the last 48 hours sending people scurrying back to their homes in panic.

All schools and colleges in the city were shut down, in order to avoid a repeat of the October 27 floods spread through the city.

The Met department said that the active northeast monsoon and a low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lankan coast was causing the heavy rains.

The rainfall flooded many low-lying areas in the city and the suburbs, causing inconvenience to the people.

Twenty-three centimeters of rain has been recorded in the last 48 hours.

Meanwhile, six women lost their lives in a stampede at a relief distribution center in north Chennai.

The mishap occurred in a temporary relief camp in Vyasarpadi where authorities were distributing rice and clothes to hundreds of flood victims.

Many people had rushed to the camp after rumours that Sunday was the last day for the distribution of relief.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha announced a compensation of Rs One lakh each to the families of the dead, and compensation of Rs 15,000 each for those injured.

At least 100 people had died in Tamil Nadu due to the heavy floods last month.
