The skies opened up late on Friday and a thunderstorm continued well into Saturday, giving the city one of its rainiest non-monsoon days, this year.
However, with reports of live electric cables breaking off overhead lines coming in from a few places, it turned out to be a bittersweet experience for Chennaiites.
With Nungambakkam recording a massive 53.3mm of rainfall in 24 hours (as of 8.30 am on Saturday), residents were glad that most of the deluge happened overnight and early in the morning. Surprisingly, the amount of rainfall recorded in Meenambakkam was less, standing at 37mm.
Met department officials said these levels of rainfall are not unprecedented at this time of the year, adding that, “there have been years when we have received more than 60mm in 24 hours time”. Heavy winds, thunder and lightning accompanied the downpour in both the city and the suburbs. Several trees were uprooted, including one near the DME’s office in Kilpauk. However, with the Poonamalee High Road being one-way at the moment, traffic was not affected. On Friday evening, major traffic snarls were seen at Adyar; traffic cops blamed it on a bus breakdown, the church festival and the rains. However, some Chennaiites thoroughly enjoyed the rains.
