BANGALORE: From now on, teaching students basic things such as hygiene and sanitation will fetch affiliated schools of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) bonus points, and they can even win awards for doing so.Aimed at inculcating good sanitation habits among schoolchildren at national level, the CBSE — in association with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) — Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and GIZ (formerly known as GTZ), has introduced the National School Sanitation Initiative. Under this initiative, sanitation is one of the six areas and themes that have been identified for a school to improve its performance in its objective of becoming a Health Promoting School. Other five themes are: food and nutrition, knowing your body, personal, behaviour and life skills, physical fitness and being responsible and safe.“Online School Sanitation Ratings have been instituted with the purpose of recognising those schools that take significant steps towards effective sanitation and improvement in service delivery, leading to the desired behavioural and attitudinal changes towards hygiene and sanitation,” CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi has stated.Based on the National School Sanitation Ratings, the MHRD will present the National School Sanitation Awards annually to schools that take steps towards betterment of sanitation in their schools and these would be rated online for sanitation. The awards will be given in a few categories, which the schools can take up as part of health and wellness clubs as well as eco-clubs.These awards are open to all school affiliated to CBSE including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, government schools, private independent schools, DAV schools, CTSA schools and Army schools, among others that come under the CBSE.
