CUTTACK: In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old pregnant woman was thrown off the Mahanadi river barrage on the Jagatpur-end and left for dead by miscreants in the wee hours of Tuesday. Her hands and legs were tied when she was pushed off the barrage. The woman, Minati Pradhan, of Odagaon in Nayagarh district, however, escaped a certain death as she fell on to the platform over the barrage gate but sustained critical injuries. She was rescued by the police and rushed to the SCBMCH. Having sustained multiple fractures in the rib and pelvic areas, Pradhan has been admitted to the ICU. According to reports, the ghastly act was a fallout of an illicit love affair even as Jagatpur police have lodged a case under Section 307 of IPC for attempted murder. Police sources said, Minati had been staying in the house of a retired judicial officer SK Ray at Lumbini Vihar in Bhubaneswar for more than six years. She had in due course reportedly developed a relationship with Ray’s son Satyabrata. As she had become pregnant, a plan was allegedly hatched to eliminate her, sources said on the basis of her preliminary statement. She was allegedly taken out of their house by three persons on Monday night and brought to the barrage in a car. Her hands and legs were tied and mouth gagged after which the miscreants, under the cover of darkness, dragged her up to the barrage parapet on Gate No. 11-12 and pushed her.   Providence though ruled otherwise and Minati instead of falling to her death in the deep waters of the reservoir crashed on to the concrete platform over the gates. She suffered multiple fractures in the body and was spotted lying in the helpless state by some fishermen. Police were immediately informed and rushed to rescue her. “As the lady is not in a condition to give a proper statement, we have filed a case of attempted murder on preliminary and circumstantial evidence. We are investigating every aspect of the case,” DCP Praveen Kumar said.
