New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee – who met with a serious accident on Saturday night – was brought to New Delhi and was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital.
Mukherjee – whose car collided head-on with a speeding truck when he was returning to Kolkata from Murshidabad - is reported to be in stable condition.
On Sunday afternoon, doctors at the Army Hospital issued a medical bulletin declaring a CT scan was conducted on the 72-year-old politician to understand the extent of his injuries and that he was in a stable condition.
Mukherjee – who was administered first aid, given 12 stitches and was treated for other injuries at a hospital in Nakashipara in Bengal – was flown to Delhi in a special flight.
However, the condition of his driver and security guard is reported to be serious. Two Congressmen accompanying Mukherjee were also injured in the accident.
Murshidabad DIG Debasis Ray ruled out any foul play in the accident, saying prima facie it looked just a road accident.
Cong demands probe
Meanwhile, Congress alleged there were lapses in Mukherjee’s security and demanded an inquiry into the accident that occurred at Nakashipara in West Bengal’s Nadia district.
"Mukherjee is the External Affairs Minister and a very important political figure who gets 'Z'-category security. He gets high security abroad but in his own state, there was no proper security arrangement for him. We demand an inquiry into the security lapses," state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharya was quoted as saying.
Bhattacharya said the accident could have been fatal had Mukherjee not been travelling in a bulletproof car.
