The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Alwar faced scrutiny on Monday, July 1, as a routine health checkup for state Forest and Environment Minister Sanjay Sharma was disrupted by a sudden power outage at the facility. The incident occurred while the minister was undergoing examination in the hospital’s ICU, highlighting severe infrastructural challenges and sparking allegations of government negligence.
The power outage, lasting approximately five minutes, occurred during the minister’s visit, fortunately without impacting any critical patient care as no ventilator-dependent patients were present at that time. The hospital personnel swiftly activated backup measures to restore lighting, with Dr Sunil Chauhan, the hospital’s PMO, seen coordinating efforts to mitigate the situation.
Reacting to inquiries, the MLA downplayed the incident, attributing it to routine fluctuations in power supply. Electricity interruptions are not uncommon, he stated, deflecting further questions about the hospital’s overall condition.
However, eyewitnesses reported additional lapses in hospital management, including inadequate drainage during heavy rainfall, which resulted in water pooling in some wards. When questioned about these issues, the minister asserted that the hospital has adequate drainage systems in place to handle such situations.
The incident has prompted criticism from opposition leaders, including BJP spokesperson Dr KK Sharma, who accompanied the minister during his visit and shielded him from media attention. The opposition argued that the power outage exemplifies broader systemic failures within the hospital, pointing to ongoing challenges in maintaining essential services and infrastructure.
As debates continue over the state of public healthcare facilities in Alwar, calls for urgent reforms to improve conditions at the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital are expected to intensify, placing renewed pressure on local authorities to address longstanding deficiencies.
