New Delhi: The Emergency, declared by General Pervez Musharraf, has deepened Pakistan's political uncertainty. So where does Musharraf go from here? What really are his options now? Here's a look.
After imposing the Emergency, General Musharraf has two options. Under scenario one he gets the Supreme Court to endorse his presidency, removes emergency, steps down as chief of army staff, appoints General Kiyani as his successor, and holds fresh elections.
Musharraf would then share power with an elected prime minister possibly even Benazir Bhutto and a new army chief.
Under Scenario two he could win a lot more and that’s absolute power for an indefinite period, but Musharraf also stands to lose everything.
Musharraf can keep both the presidency and the uniform and he retains Emergency powers but then he risks placing the army under severe strain should terrorist and jihadi violence continues.
In that case Musharraf could even face a revolt from his top military leadership and be asked to make way for some one else if that comes to pass, even Uncle Sam may not prefer to back the general any more.
Which way does the General finally head is anyone's guess.
