The Oceanarium project is expected to get a boost soon with the much-hyped project getting included in the Emerging Kerala event. The Oceanarium, proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 480 crore will come up at the 50 acres of land at Puthuvypu and will offer unique underwater experience by showcasing aquarium alley, deep-sea tunnel, polar pavilion, shark tank, touch tank and other entertainment facilities.
The Kerala State Coastal Zone Management Authority (KSCZMA) has recently given its nod for the project.
Though environmentalists have raised eyebrows citing that the project affects the thick mangrove cover of the region, Fisheries Resource Management Society (FIRMA), the proponents of the project had put forth an offer to compensate for the ‘damage’ on the mangrove vegetation.
The agency has proposed an idea of planting and nourishing mangroves at Vypeen islands instead of the mangroves that will get affected. A mangrove pavilion will also be nurtured.
As per sources, the KSCZMA has given its clearance under certain conditions. It has also asked FIRMA to submit a detailed project report (DPR) on its plan to plant mangroves. FIRMA will soon prepare a DPR on its plans to nurture mangroves on nearly 20 acres of land at Vypeen.
The in-principle nod itself will increase the credibility of the project, they believe. The promoters hope that potential investors will show their interest on the project which will be showcased at the Emerging Kerala. Meanwhile, the proponents expect that the project will see slight escalation. The present estimate of Rs 480 crore is likely to be revised at the time of floating the tender.
The project will have to get the final clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
