BANGALORE: A seminar on ‘Kannada Cinema in the Global Context’ was organised here on Sunday by the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, in association with Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy, ahead of the Bengaluru International Film Festival. The seminar sought to answer key questions such as potential of Kannada cinema with the growing number of native migrants and how the industry should modify to respond to newer market opportunities. Speaking after inaugurating the seminar, former chief secretary Chiranjeevi Singh said, “In the last few years, animation and adaptations have been doing well in world cinema. In Kannada, remakes and dubbed films are being made. Either we go in step with what is happening in the world, or continue making the remakes.”“In areas bordering the State, some films are making reasonable profit. The problem lies with the kind of films we are making. They no longer portray Kannada environment or traditions. There is also a lack of coordination between producers, distributors and film makers,” said Jayamala, former president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), adding that internal markets should be strengthened first, before venturing into outer markets. Basavaraju, secretary, Information, Kannada and Culture Department, said the proposed film city should be a reality. Academy chairman T S Nagabharana and chairman of the Suchitra Cinema and Culture Academy V N Subba Rao also emphasised on this matter and spoke of required developments in the industry .
