MADURAI: Mohammad Niaz Abdul Rasheed, who was arrested in Paris a couple of weeks ago on charges of recruiting people for a terrorist outfit, has no adverse records pending against him. However, the intelligence sleuths are seriously trying to find out who helped him clear police verification to obtain passport, said a senior police official, here on Tuesday.Police said that Niaz was able to obtain two passports, one from Tiruchy region for which the police verification had been carried out from Melur Police station. The other one might have been obtained before all the passport offices in the country were brought under a single network or a fabricated one, police said.Niaz who had gone to work in France had come down to Madurai 3 months ago and stayed in Melur for a fortnight with his mother Fatima who is living in Sandhaipettai in Melur.During his stay in Madurai, he was under the surveillance of Research and Analysis Wing of India. He had also travelled to some of the neighbouring districts to meet some persons. However, the surveillance did not make any headway towards establishing his connections with any terrorist outfits. Otherwise, Niaz would not have been allowed to leave the country, police said.Local police still say that they were trying to verify the information regarding Niaz. Though some neighbours vouched that Niaz had come down to Madurai to meet his mother. They do not know much about the family except that Niaz was working in France and his father in some Arab country. It may be recalled that terrorist Imam Ali, was also staying in Melur. It was here that he and his associates were said to have made bombs, in order to blow off Meenakshi temple.
