A newly married woman's noble gesture in agreeing to allow transplantation of the organs of her deceased husband has saved six lives, doctors at a city based hospital said. The 39-year-old man's two kidneys were donated to KG Hospital and Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital in Coimbatore, two heart valves to Madras Medical Mission and liver to Appollo Hospitals, both in Chennai, and two eyes to KG Hospital.

The man, who got married in June 2013, was declared brain dead on Tuesday after an accident on July 8. He was riding pillion to get the marriage certificate attested from a notary when he had met with the accident in Meenakshipuram near Pollachi, 40km from Coimbatore.

After first aid, he was admitted to KG Hospital here where surgeons monitored his condition of serious head injury. He was declared brain dead at around 7.40 pm on Tuesday, Hospital Chairman G Bhakthavatsalam said.

His family was informed and his wife voluntarily agreed to donate all the organs of her deceased husband. Accordingly, harvesting of multi organs-- liver, heart valves, kidney and eyes--was carried out by seven surgeons, he said.
