KOCHI: For techies around the world, software giant Microsoft offers a perfect treat, with the launch of the first public demo of Windows 8. Unlike the hitherto used keyboard and mouse that we’ve been using for the past 25 years, the new version is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface. Windows 8 which launched its test version on Wednesday in Spain gave the public a first hand experience to try out its slick new look. The new gen Windows is beautiful, fast and its fluid design is perfect for a range of hardware from compact, touch-enabled slates and lightweight laptops, to large powerful all-in-ones with high definition screens. It gives instant access to apps, files and the important information in a single touch which enables one to spend less time navigating and more time doing what one actually wants to do. As it is cloud connected, one can access one’s photos, documents and settings from any Windows 8 PC. Another benefit of using Windows 8 is that it requires less memory, thereby giving more room for the apps and data. For the first time since its inception, the trademark Windows ‘Start’ button will not appear - it is replaced by a sliding panel-based menu. The new Start screen provides all the necessary information such as contacts, weather, calendar reminders and many more functions in a single place. It also shows up-to-date information from the apps. Windows 8 assures fluid, natural switching between running apps. Unlike Windows Phone 7, apps can show some information within the tiles and users needn’t click on the weather app to see the current temperature. This is the coolest-looking feature of Windows 8 ie it allows users to view two apps at the same time-something that no existing tablet OS can do. Another highlight is that the full capabilities of Windows will be available to the users, including the Windows Explorer and Desktop. The apps use the power of HTML5, tapping into the native capabilities of Windows using standard JavaScript and HTML to deliver new kinds of experiences. Although the new user interface is designed and optimised for touch, it works equally well with a mouse and keyboard. With the new Windows 8, one can use whatever kind of device one prefers, and can run the apps one loves. This is sure to inspire a new generation of hardware and software development, improving the experience for PC users around the world.
