BANGALORE: The 98th meeting of the Bangalore University Syndicate on Wednesday took cognizance of the crumbling infrastructure at the university’s hostels. It has been resolved to reconstitute the Hostel Management/Improvement Committee under the chairmanship of C K Jagadish Prasad. “The condition of hostels in BU have always been a matter of concern. Our hostels are currently designed to accommodate only 300 students, whereas demand for accommodation crosses 700. The committee will look into water supply, sanitation and basic facilities at the hostels,” said a university official on condition of anonymity. In an other important decision, the Syndicate resolved to constitute a separate Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) to revisit 28 colleges, recommended for disaffiliation for the year 2011-12. In a report published on November 23, Express had highlighted how several colleges were disaffiliated by LICs on baseless grounds. “We had opposed the constitution of the earlier LICs. This LIC has been approved by the Syndicate. The committee will revisit the colleges to verify infrastructure,” Syndicate member said. Statutes for DCC&DEThe Syndicate further resolved to constitute a four-member committee headed by Prof Chambi Puranik to form statutes for Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education (DCC&DE). Express spoke to Dr Niranjan B R, director, DCC&DE, who welcomed this move. “When I took over the directorate, there were no statutes. I was told that only draft statutes had been made. The directorate needs statutes and it is a really good move,” he said. “This committee has been formed in the background of the poor performance of the DCC&DE. A change in distance education syllabus is also possible,” said a Syndicate member.
