Indian Navy’s sail training ship ‘INS Sudarshini’ sets on its historical ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)expedition from here on Saturday.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral D K Joshi flagged off the sixmonth voyage at the Naval Base in the presence of senior diplomats from the ASEAN countries.

A collaborative venture of Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs, the expedition marks the 20 years of ASEAN-India dialogue and ten years of ASEAN- India summit level partnership.

An ASEAN car rally is also scheduled this year to commemorate this mile stone in India-ASEAN relations.

Speaking on the occasion Admiral Joshi said that cultural, economic and diplomatic linkages across the Indian Ocean are being reinforced through this kind of endeavours.

Referring to regional initiatives like IONS and MILAN, he said that these initiatives help to face challenges in the maritime domain. He also termed ‘INS Sudarshini’ as India’s ambassador- at-large. It is an effort to track the sea routes of our ancestors, he said.

Ambassador Shyam Saran, Co Chair of the ASEAN Indian Eminent Persons Group said that the voyage will mark the contemporary maritime linkages of trade and technology. During its 12,000 mile expedition, ‘Sudarshini’ will visit 13 ports in nine countries in South East Asia.
