PUDUCHERRY: Interim relief for those affected by cyclone Thane in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu would be released in a day or two, Union Minister of State for PMO V Narayanasamy said on Monday. Speaking to Express during his visit to the cyclone affected areas here, he said the Puducherry government has sought an interim relief of Rs 500 crore to provide immediate relief. Chief minister N Rangasamy had sent a report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh five days ago claiming that the damage was around Rs 2,500 crore and sought an interim relief of Rs 500 crore. It was being processed and the quantum of interim relief would be announced in a day or two, Narayanasamy said. The total cyclone relief for Puducherry and Tamil Nadu would be decided only after the assessment committee gave its recommendation on the Puducherry government’s report. He said that he would try his best to secure more relief than the amount recommended by the assessment committee for Puducherry.Narayanasamy said he had already met the Prime Minister, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and President and pleaded with them for release of adequate funds to tide over the devastation caused by the cyclone. He said that a scheme needed to be worked out for the reconstruction of damaged houses and huts. Farmers had also suffered as their crops had been razed to the ground, while fishermen were without livelihood as their boats and nets were damaged. All these people need to restart their activities for which government has to extend assistance, he said.
